Known to this day for it`s traditional attractions like wood-carving or the annually performed Pasion-play. Oberammergau and it`s mountain landscape was also already in the 19th century a popular travel destination for King Ludwig II. He contributed this share to the beauty and harmony of the Ammer Valley by converting his famils hunting lodge in the forest, into most magnificent castle. This castle was to become the only one completed during his lifetime.
A journey worth making is the one hour drive to the summer residence of King Ludwig II, Castle Linderhof. Picturesquely situated at the foot of the Oberammmerau Mountains, the castle gardens, especially, leave an unforgetable impression.
Very close to the Schloss Linderhof you will also find Kloster Ettal (Cloister Ettal), founded in 1330.
You can round off an excursion through the Ammergau with a visit to the baroque chruch, Wallfahrtskirche Wies.
Also picturesquely situated is the old town of Füssen with its Kloster of St. Mang, Hohes Schloss and town museum.
